IIT Hyderabad

In addition to software resources like MATLAB, Ansys Electronics and Motor-Cad available with institute wide license subscriptions, the IED Lab also has additional resources listed below.

Software Resources

We have a full professional license and academic licenses for the PLECS simulation package for system and circuit simulations. There is a standalone version as well as a MATLAB blockset. The blockset integrates perfectly with Simulink, and complements the functionality of Simulink tools. The C-script functionality provides an easy way to simulate complex PWM patterns accurately. PLECS is also a useful tool for power loss evaluation and thermal design of power electronic systems, especially with several manufacturers now providing PLECS device loss models on their websites. IITH students can reach out to me to get a free and fully functional student academic license code valid for one year.

Our lab is equipped with full licenses for JMAG, a leading simulation software for electromagnetic field analysis and design. JMAG enables high-precision finite element analysis (FEA) for optimizing the performance and efficiency of electrical devices such as motors, transformers, PCBs and actuators. With its advanced capabilities for thermal, structural, and electromagnetic simulations, JMAG supports comprehensive research and development efforts in our lab.

Licenses for Altium Designer are available through a tie-up with the Altium Education Program. Altium Designer is a comprehensive PCB design software used for designing, analyzing, and manufacturing electronic circuits. It offers advanced tools for schematic capture, PCB layout, and multi-board design integration, enabling our students to implement cutting-edge PCB layouts.

Hardware Resources

  • Digital Oscilloscopes and Probes

Our lab is equipped with several 4-channel Digital Storage Oscilloscopes from Keysight and Siglent ranging from 70 MHz to 200 MHz with sampling rates from 500 MSa/s to 1 GSa/s. We also have high-bandwidth current probes and 7 kV isolated voltage probes from Tektronix and Pintek that enable accurate measurement and capturing of the fast transients associated with power converters

  • Power Converters and Control Boards

Several three-phase power converters in the range of 10 kVA rating are available to support experimental testing in motor drives and grid-connected systems. The available systems include Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and Current Source Inverter (CSI) stacks with Si and SiC devices. We also have in-house designed DSP and FPGA boards that can be used to control these power converters.
