GRADING and EXAMS:
There will be a viva at the end of the term. There won't be the usual final exam
involving an experiment. You will get 10 marks for each report and the rest will be adjusted accordingly.
Make sure you write a clear report (see below to see what I expect in the report) as it will give you most of your marks.
Objectives of the lab
The Plan We have a total of eight experiments with some experiments requiring two weeks at a stretch. Your batch of 14 studens has been broken into seven different groups. Most of the experiments will be conducted on the Subsonic Wind Tunnel available in the Workshop. Since we have only one such facility, the entire batch will perform the experiment together. Each week, one group will take the responsibility of taking the setting up the experiment with the help of Mr. Srikanth & the TAs, collecting the data and then sharing the data to all the students and the instructor.
List of experiments
- Experiment - 1: Calibration of digital pressure transducers.
- Experiment - 2: Study of flow separation over a circular cylinder.
- Experiment - 3: Determine the drag coefficient over a cylinder with different Reynolds numbers.
- Experiment - 4: Determine the lift coefficient of an airfoil with different angle of attacks.
- Experiment - 5: Determine aerodynamic force coefficients of airfoil with flap angles.
- Experiment - 6: Study of flow over a flat plate.
- Experiment - 7: Find the thermal conductivity of fluids: water and air.
- Experiment - 8: Determine the heat transfer properties in Fluidized Bed with different sizes of granular (Fused Alumina) material.
- Experiment - 2: Study of flow separation over a circular cylinder.
Regarding Lab Report:
A single typed report to be submitted by each group. Reports should be typed in a neat format (use Times New Roman if you use Word or use Latex) containing a clear description of the theory involved with each experiment. Use your own words to write the report (I don't want to see a copy of previous week's report of your friends). What I expect to see in the report:
(a) Title of experiment
(b) Group ID; names of group members
(c) Date experiment was performed
(d) Date report was submitted
Theoretical background
What principle is this experiment designed to illustrate?
Describe the theory and any relevant equations/derivations.
Initial set up
Parameters varies
Table containing the data
One sample calculation
Plot graphs using either Excel or Matlab (take print of the graphs to be submitted in your report)
Discuss the trends obtained in your results - do the trends make physical sense to you
What did you learn from the experiment
Possible source of error, if any.
Policies: Missing the week's experiment will normally result in a mark of zero. Exceptions may be granted in two cases: prior consent of the instructor or a medical emergency. In the latter case, the instructor must be notified as soon as possible (preferably before the day of the lab), and presented with a doctor's note immediately upon the student's return to IITH.
