COURSE DESCRIPTION
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are rapidly changing the face of personal computing. Users carry such devices with them almost everywhere they go, and have come to depend on them for much or all of their computing and communication needs. While these devices are simple and intuitive to use and seem to “just work”, a peek under the hood reveals a lot of machinery and technical challenges. These range the management of battery power and wireless bandwidth to user location tracking and security. In this course, we will take an in-depth look at some of the core issues in mobile systems, with an emphasis on cutting-edge research on these. The topics expected to be covered in the course include:
- Energy management
- Mobile wireless communication
- Localization and location-based services
- Mobile sensing
- Security and Privacy
- Mobile-plus-cloud computing
- Mobile devices and ICTD
